Call on District Six community to participate in Chapel Street Mural Art workshop

The City of Cape Town is inviting District Six community members and all interested parties to participate in a mural art workshop on Saturday, 16 September 2023. The City would like to engage and obtain input from residents on potential plans for art murals along the historical Chapel Street in the heart of the District Six neighbourhood.
'One of the projects that has been identified in collaboration with the District Six caretakers is the upgrade of Chapel Street to facilitate movement between Trafalgar Park, New Hanover Street and the CBD. Chapel Street is strategically located to unite the existing District Six on the eastern side of the elevated freeway with the recently returned community on the western side of the freeway. Chapel Street has the potential to highlight character and identity in the area, and that is our objective with this art mural project. We would appreciate all the insightful contributions from residents so the mural artwork can depict the true essence of District Six while encapsulating the vision the community has for their collective future,' said the City's Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews.
Art Workshop 1 details are as follows:
- Date: 16 September 2023
- Time: 13:30 to 17:30
- Venue: Lydia Centre For Memory (Corner of Chapel & St Phillips Street)
Activities planned for the art workshop include:
- Storytelling and developing themes for artwork in Chapel Street
- Developing the criteria by which prospective artists will be measured
- Deciding on a panel that will select artworks/artists in the next workshop
The outcomes of the workshop will be facilitated in the preparation of the content and the artist will receive detailed feedback. The City then plans to display the mural proposal at a public open house in November as part of the broader Chapel Street Implementation and Upgrade Project. If all processes go according to plan the approved mural should be complete on the designated walls by April 2026.
This Mural Art project forms part of the overall upgrade of Chapel Street, which builds on the outcomes of the Public Realm Strategy that was developed in cooperation with the nominated District Six Caretakers, and the wider community, during virtual meetings and at Open House events held in 2021 and 2022.
